Personal trainer and model, Matt Chapman, has one of the country’s best-loved derrieres after being cast as one of two Aussie models to battle it out to become Ellen’s Australian male underwear model. Matt won the title of Mr Sydney when the Ellen Show visited Sydney in April 2013.
The 26-year-old was born and raised in country Queensland, and moved to Sydney 16 months ago to establish his own personal training business, working 60 hours a week training Sydney’s most well connected (and after seeing Matt) hottest bodies. By most accounts, Matt is your average Aussie bloke. What’s not so average about Matt is the guy with the ‘big rig’ and the Potts Point postcode was an obese teenager.
So how did Matt turn it around?
“As a teenager, I felt very different to everyone because I was so overweight. I got to a point where I would see myself in photographs and didn’t like what i saw. One day, I was sitting down and grabbed my stomach with two hands – I knew I had to change. That afternoon I put on my runners and ran 500 meters and walked home. Every day I set myself a challenge to run a little further, then a little further again, until i could run 5 kilometres without stopping. I used to run because I could go anywhere and no one could see me.”
“I also taught myself how to eat properly and the importance of exercise and nutrition. I started reading books about nutrition, writing everything I ate down, and developed my own point scoring system for the food i was eating. I lost 18 kilograms in approximately 12 months and since then, cooking, nutrition and fitness have become a central to my lifestyle. I was motivated to teach others the lessons I taught myself, so I sharpened my skills with certificates in fitness and completed several specialist fitness courses. I train up to 25 clients some weeks and I’ve been able to support my clients to achieve their goals.”
“One of my clients encouraged me to put together a modelling portfolio. My brother-in-law knew Ellen was coming to Sydney and entered me into her underwear competition. I have always been a big fan myself, so to win the Sydney competition, fly with Ellen and her entourage to Melbourne, then be flown to LA for the show was quiet and experience!” said Matt.
And what’s next for Matt, aside from the rollercoaster ride that has come along with his Ellen experience?
“I want to help as many other people as I can transform their lives through fitness and nutrition, to coach people to lead happier and healthier lives”.
